What you need to know about the Cape Fear Coast

While getting the word out about our awesome comedy festival is of course number one in our minds.  We also want to help spread the word about the great little city our festival is located in and it's surrounding area. The following is some helpful information if you have never been to Wilmington.

Cape Fear River Boardwalk in Wilmington, NC
Where is the Cape Fear Coast?
The Cape Fear Coast is the area of land surrounding where the Cape Fear River ends its 200 mile flow into the Atlantic Ocean between Southport on the south side of the river and Carolina Beach, North Carolina to the north.  The area includes Ocean Isle Beach, Holden Beach, Oak Island, Southport, Wilmington, Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach.  Wilmington is the metropolitan center of the Cape Fear Coast. Wilmington is located in the far Southeast portion of the state of North Carolina.  It is only an hour and a half or so to get to Myrtle Beach South Carolina to the south, two hours to get to Raleigh to the northwest. Raleigh is where you have to go to get to the closest. The coast contains almost 30 miles of beaches. One of the larger being Oak Island, North Carolina, where an several seasons of the show 'Teen Mom' have been filmed (Yes, Jenelle Evans lives/lived there).
Ugly Ass Dolphin Fish

I heard people fish for Dolphins here!?
They do, and they taste delicious.  Dolphin Fish are also known as Mahi-Mahi.  Actual dolphins are not fished for but they do frequent the coast and it is not unlikely that you will see one while there.  This is even more likely in the spring when they are following large migrations of fish northward.

In regards to seafood, May is the beginning of soft shelled blue crab season (one of my favorite's often found in Spider Roll sushi). Often they are just served fried or on a sandwich, but still fried. It is the South, yall. We fry shit.

How expensive is stuff in Wilmington area?
It depends, if you are coming from the Northeast, everying is pretty cheap for the most part.  Cigarettes are about $4.50 to $5 a pack. A gallon of milk is about $4. Gas is currently $3.46 a gallon with the cheapest gas typically being at the GoGas locations around town. Hotel prices are pretty average from a national perspective.  The Hilton Riverside typically rents a room for $149 as compared to the Hilton Riverside in New Orleans at $219 a night. Rental cars are $41 a day to rent in Wilmington, which is slightly higher than most areas.
