How Port City's Top Comic influenced The Cape Fear Comedy Festival

Port City's Top Comic is a stand-up comedy contest produced by myself (Matt Ward), co-producer of the Cape Fear Comedy Festival.  Port City's Top Comic started in 2008 when Nutt Street Comedy Room was just a Tuesday night open-mic on the ground floor of the Soapbox Laundro-Lounge.  The contest was started after Ward attended the Comedy Cabanna Stand-Up Comedy Contest in Myrtle Beach in 2007. Over the next three years the contest grew to attract hundreds of comics and thousands of comedy fans becoming biggest drawing comedy events on the Carolina Coast.
In 2009 Timmy Sherrill opened Nutt Street Comedy Room in the basement of the Soapbox Laundro-Lounge (where the original open mic was held in 2007). In the next year the two would decide the scene had grown strong enough to host a small independently run comedy festival.
Port City's Top Comic had moved to City Stage at Level 5 and Nutt Street began to sell out shows in 2010.  Timmy and I took our knowledge and what we had learned by chatting up others with more experience putting on larger events and put on the first Cape Fear Comedy Festival in May of 2010.
This year marks the 6th year for Port City's Top Comic.  The finals are Saturday April 27th, 2013 at TheatreNOW located at 19. S. 10th Street in Downtown Wilmington.  The prelims of the contest were moved to Nutt Street Comedy Room this year where 90% of all seats were sold for every show including two sell out shows.
